Adding Save to collection to the Instagram reels
Hey there! My name is suraj kale. This is my first case study and starting of my UX Career! as a beginner, I’m writing this case study with understanding and the knowledge i have.
This case study is a part of UX Kickstarter Design challenge by Growthschool mentored by Anudeep Ayyagari.
App I chose
Problem Statement
Instagram introduced the “save to collections” feature for posts, allowing users to categorize content under different topics such as food, travel, and fashion. However, reels, the latest addition to Instagram’s content offerings, didn’t come with this feature, leaving users with no option to save their favorite reels in their collections.
Why This problem? because this is the inconvenience that has really annoyed me in past and still does, and I’m sure I’m not the only one!
The Approach for solving the problem statement
- Finding the Lack of Heuristic Principle: Consistency & Standards.
- Finding a Solution to fill the lack of the principle.
The solutions I came Up with, in this stage i go with the third idea.
I created paper prototypes to visualise how the redesigned screens would work.
After getting a good idea of the redesign I moved to Figma for high fidelity design
User Testing
I conducted user testing to get feedback on the new design. The tests revealed Surprising Insights.
I Will be conducting testing with two Users:
Tasks for the user
- Can you Long press on the save button?
- Is the arrangement of the buttons okay?
- does this feel natural?
- can you access the more button easily?
- can you access the remix(camera) button easily?
Things to observe
- if they’re able to see the save collection
- if they like the functionality and accessibility of the save button.
- are they able to Use both of the re-arranged buttons.
Observation notes from the users:
The tests revealed that users liked the new feature but disliked the position of the camera and more icons.
To redesign the UI after User feedback, I proceeded back to the prototyping stage and kept the UI the same, then added the functionality of the Long press to Save to collection.
Key TakeAways/learnings from this project
- UX design Is user centric but a UX Designer has to take the business in the consideration too.
- You cannot be perfect. Chase perfection, embrace Imperfetion.
- Being a Student for life!
